Carers in the workplace

One in eight Australian employees is a carer. Carers Australia has a dedicated program to support carers in the workplace: the ‘Work and Care’ initiative.

Carers in the workplace

Carers work in all industries

35% are managers and professionals
29% are technicians, trade workers and labourers
25% are clerical, administrative and sales workers
11% are in community care services

Keeping carers at work

Many of these carers are at the peak of their skills and career, so it’s critical that businesses retain these experienced employees.

Most carers don’t want any special treatment at work, but it’s a reality that they have more commitments than their non-carer colleagues.

Carers Australia has a dedicated program to support carers in the workplace: the ‘Work and Care’ initiative.

About the Work and Care initiative

Its aim is to improve carers’ capacity to combine employment with their caring responsibilities and to assist long-term carers transition into employment when their caring role stops or is reduced.

The program also supports businesses to put flexible options in place to keep carers in the workplace, which benefits the organisation by reducing absenteeism and recruitment and retraining costs and increasing employees’ productivity and job satisfaction
