Community Benefit Fund keeps carers on the move

Carers NT is pleased to unveil two new Toyota HiAce 12 seater buses the organisation secured through a major grant from the Northern Territory Government Community Benefit Fund.

The buses will provide vital transportation for Carers NT’s clients in the Darwin and Katherine regions.

Carers NT CEO Steve Vitone said that the lack of transportation is one of the major issues in the sector.

“Without suitable transport options, individuals are often limited in the choices available to them and the quality of their social engagement. These vehicles will enable us to provide invaluable support to carers and their loved ones to participate in community activities, contributing to their lifestyle and health and wellbeing,” Mr Vitone said.

The new vehicles will provide transport for clients participating in a range of programs organised by Carers NT including Aged Care and Urban Access.

The Evening Explorers Program for example, provides support to ageing clients who may get restless in the late afternoon. The client is collected and returned to prearranged locations between the hours of 3:30 and 6:30pm. Travelling by mini-bus, provides an opportunity to socialise with others, participate in activities of interest, and enjoy a light evening snack. Providing the carer with respite from caring for their loved one at what can be a busy time of the day.

The Urban Access Program, Connecting with the Community in Darwin, offers group based outings and activities that are culturally appropriate for Darwin’s Ageing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. The clients are collected and venture out around Darwin on outings and activities. Morning tea and lunch are provided as part of the service, often enjoyed at scenic spots and places of interest.

“Carers NT is extremely grateful to be able to enhance these valuable services and thanks the Northern Territory Government for the funding opportunities.

“With an estimated 30,000 carers in the Northern Territory, nearly everyone knows someone who’s a carer or relies on one, and it’s inevitable that each of us will be cared for or become a carer at some stage of our life.

“Having suitable community infrastructure and support is vital to addressing the needs of carers and assisting them in the vital role they play.”

Carers NT is a Registered NDIS Provider, this transport will also assist the organisation with the provision of service under NDIS.
