Carer Recognition Program - Certificate III in Individual Support

Carer Recognition Program - Certificate III in Individual Support

Carers NT is offering the opportunity for Carers to gain a Certificate III in Individual Support

Introduction:

Carers NT is offering the opportunity for Carers to be part of an initiative that will help Carers gain a Certificate III in Individual Support.  Applications are being accepted until Tuesday the 12th of September 2017.

If you are or have been a Carer and would like to work in the disability or community service sector, then you can use your experience as a carer to gain credit towards a Certificate III in Individual Support.

You will be involved in a simple process which will involve sharing your experience with other carers and participating in training workshops.

Program Intent:

  • To recognize the prior learnings as a Carer and then bridging the Carers knowledge to obtain a Certificate III in Individual Support.
  • To do this in a safe and supportive environment that allows Carers to share their Carer Story in order to recognize the skills they have developed during their caring journey.

Commitment required:

  • From 9 am to 2 pm for 1 day per month between September 17 and March 18 (i.e. 6 days in total). If unable to meet on the nominated day, the Facilitator can do a catch up session one on one.
  • The dates nominated will be based on the majority consensus as decided on the orientation day ( planned for September 2017 – date TBC).
  • There will be time to complete all coursework and assessments while at the training to reduce workload of Carers outside of the program.

Cost:

  • No Cost for Carers to complete the Carer Recognition Program.
  • Refreshments will be provided when training.
  • Carers NT will provide respite in order to alleviate the caring role of individual Carers should this be a barrier to them attending the program.

Qualification – Certificate III in Individual Support

  • Contains the same core units as a Certificate III in Aged Services, Mental Health, Community Services and Disability Services.
  • Carers obtaining the Certificate III in Individual Support can later top up their learning by completing elective units in the above areas thus easily extend their qualification to these specific streams.
  • A Certificate III is the recommended qualification for employment under the NDIS Quality and Safeguard framework.
  • This course is run by other Registered Training Organizations such as CDU but for Carers it would more complicated to have their prior learning as a Carer recognized and there would be a cost to complete the course.

Benefits:

  • Toward the end of the program, various community organizations will be invited to talk about what they do and the types of roles they have where this qualification is requisite or desirable.
  • Assistance can be provided to support Carers to write their resume highlighting the skills they have developed informally in their caring role. Mock interviews may also be available for practicing interview skills.
  • During the Pilot Carer Recognition Program offered in 2016, this program proved to be a great source of social interaction and support for the Carers who participated.
  • In 2016, 17 Carers gained the Certificate III Individual Support with 80% of them gaining employment in various roles.

For me, the first most valued outcome from this Course has been the recognition and affirmation that it gives me for my life sacrifice, my hands-on experience and new skills and knowledge that I have acquired as a Carer. That is personally very empowering, such a boost to one's self-confidence. This Course provided me with the realisation, especially when life becomes so very confined as a Carer, that I am not alone, that we are all doing a significant, fantastic and much needed task. And the fact that our role, skills and knowledge are now recognised and acknowledged is absolutely fantastic. - Yvonne Smith Participant in the Carers Recognition Training Program 2016
