Who is a 'Carer'?

Sometimes Carers don't realise they are Carers.

If you are unsure whether you are a 'Carer', ask yourself whether you provide any of the following supports to someone in your life with disability, chronic illness, mental illness, etc.

  • Do you regularly provide emotional support to the person?
  • Do you help the person attend appointments?
  • Do you advocate for the person to access services?
  • Do you help them with personal care, transport, household tasks, communication, or to access the community?
  • Do you take time off work to care for them?
  • Do you give comfort and encouragement to keep them safe?
  • Do you monitor their safety because you are concerned for their welfare?
  • Do you help someone to live as independently as possible

The following video also talks about the specific role of Carers for a people who experience mental illness.

Carers can commence the process of registering at Carers NT by simply calling 1800 242 636 during business hours.

Please note that to register as a Carer with Carers NT, you do not need to be receiving a Centrelink Carer Allowance or Carer Payment.  We also register multiple family members who provide care and support, and in fact we have a special program for Young Carers aged between 5 and 25 to acknowledge the extra challenges they face

About Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who is in a mental health crisis (e.g., the person is suicidal or has had a traumatic experience).  Like physical first aid, mental health first aid is given until the person receives professional help or until the crisis resolves.

Mental Health First Aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training courses authored by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and delivered by accredited MHFA Instructors across the country.  Carers NT offers MHFA Courses as authored by MHFA Australia, delivered by instructors who are currently accredited by MHFA Australia.

Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches adults how to respond to an adolescent or young person who is experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.
