About Mental Health First Aid and this Course Offering
EVENT FULL - REGISTRATIONS CLOSED
For the first time Carers NT and TeamHealth are collaborating to offer Youth Mental Health First Aid at a very low cost for both Carers and Teachers. This initiative is aimed at strengthening the mental health literacy and responsiveness for the support networks around young people who experience mental health related problems. The research demonstrates that 1 in 7 primary school aged children and 1 in 4 secondary school aged children will experience a mental health related problem and that early intervention reduces the recurrence and secondary impacts of mental illness across an individuals lifespan.
Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who is in a mental health crisis (e.g., the person is suicidal or has had a traumatic experience). Like physical first aid, mental health first aid is given until the person receives professional help or until the crisis resolves. Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches adults how to respond to a young person with a mental health related problem.
Mental Health First Aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training courses authored by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and delivered by accredited MHFA Instructors across the country. Carers NT and TeamHealth offer MHFA Courses as authored by MHFA Australia, delivered by instructors who are currently accredited by MHFA Australia.
A certificate will be issued on completion of this course. Participants are also encouraged to complete the online assessment to receive a 3 year accreditation as a Youth Mental Health First Aider. Continuing Professional Development points are also available for certain professions. You must attend both sessions in full to achieve certification and the opportunity to be accredited.
