Who is Carers NT?

Carers NT is a not-for-profit, community based organisation and registered charity dedicated to improving the lives of family carers living in the Northern Territory. We work collaboratively with the Carers Associations in each state and territory along with our partners to influence the development of policies and essential services in the Northern Territory.

What services does Carers NT offer?

Carers NT represents, supports and empowers the Northern Territory’s family carers. Carers NT provide a number of key types of services to assist carers in their caring role.

Who is a carer?

Carers provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged.

Who is a Care Recipient?

The person the carer are providing support to. This could be a family member or friend with a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who is frail aged.

Does the Care Recipient have to have a diagnosis?

No, a proven diagnosis is not always required. Carers NT can provide support for carers whose caring role is ongoing, or likely to be ongoing, for at least 6 months. The expectation of six months or more of care does not apply to a carer of a person who needs palliative care. The carer must be providing care or support to a dependent family member or friend.

I am a foster carer, do I qualify?

How do I become a member?

Anyone can become a member. Membership is free for carers and shows that you strongly support the work of Carers NT. There are three membership options available.

What is the difference between becoming registered and becoming a member?

Our strength is our membership. Carers NT offers many benefits to our members, and to people who are carers themselves or interested in supporting the non-profit community. Members also assist in setting the direction of the organisation, feed into policy development and provide oversight for Carers NT operations.

I am a young carer, can you help me?

Yes. Carers NT provide services and support for Young Carers aged up to 25 years old.

What if I need an emergency Respite on the weekend?

Emergency and short-term crisis Respite may be available if you are unexpectedly unable to continue to care for someone. There are many different situations where emergency respite care might be available.

What sort of services can I access for the person I care for?

Some services Carers NT provides may be directly with the person you care for if this will assist you with your caring role, for example, in-home or out-of-home alternative care, including social and recreational activities for the person being cared for, that provide carers with a break from the caring role.
