Volunteer

Volunteers make a vital contribution to all aspects of community life. Our volunteers are crucial in supporting carers in the NT, and we’re always looking for more volunteers to join us in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs.

Volunteering is rewarding and flexible

There are many ways you can help. We have volunteers who assist with administrative support and volunteers who support socially isolated people living with a disability.

We are supportive, accessible and flexible, and you’ll never feel hurried. If you choose to volunteer, you do it in your time. We’re grateful for any time you can give.

We treasure our volunteers. They’re part of our organisation and are recognised and rewarded for their valuable contribution. - Natalie Jones, Volunteer Coordinator, Carers NT

Volunteer roles

You could volunteer to help with a wide variety of initiatives.

Office support

Help out in the Carers NT offices with project work, typing, data entry, filing, photocopying, mail outs, marketing and promotion, making follow-up calls, and conducting surveys and research.

Events

Help cook the barbecue, drive the mini bus, set up and pack down, facilitate events and assist with catering at our golf day, movie nights, barbecues and Carers Week.

Visiting isolated people

Our social support volunteers brighten many people’s lives by dropping in for a chat, a coffee, for an outing or just help out around the house for an hour or two.

Be an ambassador

Help increase the organisation’s profile and build awareness of who a carer is and what services they can access through Carers NT. Ambassadors can assist in many ways: be a guest speaker at a fundraising event, appear in promotional materials, attend media engagements or help out with news stories and sharing your own story.

What will you get out of volunteering?

  • Our volunteers are given full training and a formal induction so they feel every bit a valued part of the Carers NT team.
  • Build your skills, contribute to a workplace and increase your ‘employability’.
  • New Australians can ‘skill up’ ready for their entry into the workforce.
  • Make new friends, interact with different people, build your sense of self-worth, have a new purpose and feel good about contributing to your community in such a valuable way.
  • Employees who ‘give back’ by volunteering are helping fulfil corporate community objectives in a meaningful way.

All volunteers are fully insured and receive an induction and welcome pack.

Our volunteers

There’s no ‘one type’ of volunteer. Our volunteers are:

  • mums, dads and grandparents
  • elderly people
  • young people
  • young mums who love getting out of the house for a while
  • men who help out with heavy lifting and cooking the barbecue at events
  • corporate teams
  • students.

Volunteer criteria

All volunteers must meet the following criteria.

  • Willingness to undertake a Police Check
  • Willingness to undertake a Working with Children Check (Ochre card)
  • Must be of legal age (largely due to the legal issues, insurance compliance)
  • Commit for 6 months
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and procedures
  • Demonstrate belief in the values of volunteering and Carers NT goals and objectives
  • Demonstrate ability in flexibility, reliability and punctuality
